The Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation is awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. to financial professionals who possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent, have 3 years of full-time personal financial planning experience (2,000 hours equals one year full time), complete a CFP Board-registered education program or are qualified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or who hold a Ph.D. in a qualifying degree, or a JD degree, and pass an examination. Candidates must also meet certain ethical standards, agree to comply with the CFP Board's Standards of Professional Conduct and adopt designated standards of professional practice. The CFP® designation requires 30 hours of continuing education every two years.
